Newsletter 4-2-14

Third and Fourth Grade News
May 2, 20014
Hello, Parents!  May is here!  Wow!  There are only a few weeks left of school, and we have so much to do!  Below, I will give you a rundown of what the rest of our school year looks like.  Here is what we accomplished this week:

Religion- We have been discussing Jesus and his miracles, as well as being tempted by the devil.  We talked a lot about our own temptations and ways to overcome them with the help of prayer and Scripture.

Reading/Spelling- Both grade levels finished up our last reading stories in our reading books!  We will continue with spelling words, reading, and writing, but will incorporate this with our Missouri History.  Our spelling words and vocabulary words will be words form the Missouri text, and we will begin studying and reading about famous Missourians.  By the end of today, your child will have picked pout a Missourian to study.  This research will be completed primarily at school.
Fourth graders shared their biography rugs on Wednesday.  They are fabulous and hanging in the hallway!  As 3rd graders finish these up, they can bring finished products to school to share.  They have until May 15th
Fourth graders learned about their last book report this week.  They are to pick out a picture book, read it, study it, and complete a book report form.  (Many are already finished with this step.)  Then, in class, they are going to being to write a picture book of their own.  They will go through all of these steps of planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.  We are excited for the final product!

Math- We have several more students (5) on their way to Winstead’s!  Yeah!  Thank you for working with your child on their facts.  We will take our trip to Winstead’s after school on May 14th.  They children will have until the 13th to “qualify!” Third graders began learning longer multiplication this week, and began working on mental math.  Fourth grade is working on long division with two-digit divisor.  They are doing well!

Missouri History
As I said above, we are studying famous Missourians.  Your child will have one to research, write about, and then portray at our Famous Missourian Living Museum on May 12th here at school.  I will be sending you a formal invitation later today!  The only part that I will ask you to help with is to help your child find something to wear that may portray that character.  Please don’t spend money on anything…whatever you have around the house will work!  In the past, I have had kids wear dad’s suit jacket, paint on mustaches, wear dance costumes, mom’s dresses, etc.  Please ask your child tonight who they are studying!  Thank you for your help in this!  They are learning so much and are excited to share… J
Here is a super-fun site I found to learn all you can!  I had fun browsing this the other night:

We have finished up chapter 4 and will have a test over this next Friday, May 9th.  Please see the attached study guides.  I have printed these off for your child too.  Study guides are coming home and there is also a link to a jeopardy game below:

We will have our final Missouri quiz on Monday, May 19th.  Study guide is attached.  Thank you.

A Trivia Night auction item this year was “Principal for the Day”.  We will celebrate this day on Monday of next week.  Our “principal” will be Jimmy from first grade.  He will have lots of special treats in store for all of us on Monday, which we’ll keep a secret for now, but one of his perks is picking the dress code for the day.  Students are supposed to wear BLUE.  We’re excited for this fun change of schedule on Monday!

Special Classes:
Art-Moms, we created cards and gifts for you and are excited to bring these home to share!
Writing – We shared some of our biography rugs, and worked on our letters to Mom.
P.E.- We played Dr. Dodge ball this week—a voted favorite!  (Thanks, Linus!)
Music- We were back into the swing of things with Music this week!  We met with Mrs. Krekel and reviewed notes, and listened to some Louis Armstrong, as we studied the trumpet.

Please remember:
We have our Missouri End-of-the-Year field trip scheduled for May 14th.  You should have received the invitation.  Here is the link:
