Newsletter 11-12-15

Hello, parents!  I am sending this a bit early because I will not be at school tomorrow.  Mrs. Stack has so generously offered to substitute for my class.  Thank you, Jennifer!  We have had another busy week!  I was so very proud of the children and how they shared our message at the Chapel service on Wednesday morning.  We talked about glorifying the Lord and trying to think more like Jesus.  It was awesome!

Here is what we have been up to:
Religion-We have been talking about the Exodus and how the Israelites sand songs of praises.  We should do the same, an remember to count our blessings.  J

Math-Both groups took their tests over telling time, and we began multiplication this week!  We learned terms like factor, product, and array.  Third grade will begin multiplication mad minutes next week, and start memorizing them.  PLEASE work with flash cards at home or computer games so that these become second nature to your child.  Thank you for any help you can give!  Fourth graders worked with multiplication and division fact families, and relating both with variables.  Some of them are struggling with their facts too, so please remind them to practice!

Language Arts- Third graders read the story “Young Thomas Edison,” and fourth graders read “Jose:  Born to Dance!” Both were biographical stories—and we learned so many neat facts about Thomas Edison and Jose Limon!

Social Studies/History-We have been learning all about the first Thanksgiving!  This week, we talked about the Pilgrims coming to America on the Mayflower, about their first houses, about meeting the Wampanoag, trading, about Squanto, and so much more.  We have each made up a new Wampanoag or Pilgrim name, and will continue to learn as much as we can before our feast next Wednesday!  Be sure to ask your child for some new, cool facts he or she has learned!

P.E.- This week in P.E., we played Dr. Dodgeball and Four Quadrant Dodgeball.

Art- We finished up our zentangle pumpkins and Luther Seals.  We also began making Wampanoag “leather” art with Native American designs on brown paper bags.   These will be on display very soon!

Writers’ Workshop/Computer Time- We have begun writing about what our families do on Thanksgiving.  Each child got an assignment:  to bring back a paper where they have written down a favorite recipe from their family.  It does not have to be a Thanksgiving Recipe, but just one that they love.  They also need to illustrate their family eating it.  J  Both the writing and the recipe are due on November 17th.  These will be assembled into a class book.  Thanks for you for your help with this!  In Computer Class, we have been publishing like crazy!

Music- With Mrs. Pennington, we practiced and reviewed notes and beats.  We also worked on our Advent and Christmas program songs.
