Newsletter 9-16-16

Hello, 3rd/4th grade families!  Another week has sped by!  Can you believe it?!
I hope this week has been a wonderful one for you—filled with the God’s Blessings!

We have been busy, busy around here!

Here is what we have been up to:
Religion-This week we really focused on perfecting our Chapel message.  Didn’t the kiddos do a great job?  (Thanks for coming to worship with us!)  I loved how Moses was able to portray to the kids, through examples, what the 2nd commandment is, and how to apply it to our lives.  This week in class, we discussed the story of Mary and Martha.  We talked about ways that we all are like both of them at times, and how we need to strive to be more like Mary in the story—ready to listen to Jesus!

Memory for next week:  (We are learning the books of the Old Testament!)
September 20-
Jonah
Micah
Nahum
Habakkuk
Zephaniah
Haggai
Zechariah
Malachi

September 23-Recite all of the OT books

Language Arts- The third graders read “Destiny’s Gift,” and we talked a lot about character, and how to make other feel loved and appreciated.   Fourth graders read “The Power of W.O.W.”, and then will put on the skit for the rest of the class.  They have been busy planning this and working together!  We also reviewed the differences between sentences and questions.

Math- Third graders finished up reviewing chapter 1 and took their tests.  These will come home on Monday.  Yesterday, we began chapter 2, and have learned about the addition properties and are reviewing odd and even numbers.  Most of this chapter is review and we will zoom through it, I am sure! Fourth graders are working on estimating and adding whole numbers, as well as reviewing those addition properties.  We are also focusing on number sense.

Social Studies- As you’ve probably heard, we have been working on School of Economics!  CONGRATULATIONS to our new mayor, Hailey Schuster!!  Students each got to vote for mayor this past Monday, and it was a well-run race!  We received our jobs this week, began meeting in shops, creating signs, nametags, and working on passports.  Today we made out our shop supply lists, and took out a loan application.  Next week, we will talk about supply and demand and price our items.  J  It is all so exciting!

P.E.- This week in P.E., we continued to practice volleyball serving, and began game situations.

Music- We have begun learning a new “Books of the Bible” song, which is really helping with our memory work!  We are reviewing beats, using rhythm sticks, and practicing our upcoming song for church, as well.  We are learning SO much!  Please don’t forget that 3rd grade sings September 25th in church.  (North Campus) 8:30 and 9:45 am… a note from Mrs. Pennington went home earlier this week.  Please look for it in folders!

Writers’ Workshop- This week, we finished our 'I Poems" and began publishing them...  We also continued on stories.  Next week we will begin to write personal narratives.  We will read several samples, and then begin the drafting process of our experiences.  We will work on these for the next few weeks, going through the writing process.

Computers- 3rd and 4th grades practiced logging into Google Drive and creating documents.  Then they were able to cast their vote for President (and prove they were not a robot!  Ask your kiddo about this one!)

Art- We learned the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors this week!  We created color wheels, using only primary colors to mix all of the rest of them.  Next week, we will use this mixing skill to first draw, and then paint hot air balloons.  J

Points of Interest:
*If you would like to help generate money to put toward School of Economics, please sign up to work a home volleyball game!  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4dadab2da7f58-home

*We have our first school wide mission project!  River Roads Lutheran School has been “Sharing the Caring Christ” for 146 years in St. Louis. Unfortunately, due to the economic challenges and lack of funding, River Roads is faced with the possibility of closing their doors. Timothy Lutheran School has chosen to make this our first Mission Project of the year. We are determined to raise a minimum of $500 by September 28, to offset some of their expenses. The collection can is located on the trophy case outside of the office. Right now we have gathered a little over $150.00.  We hope and pray that your family is moved by the Spirit to help them, so they can continue to develop young Christian leaders of today and tomorrow! Thanks in advance for your generosity.

*When 5/6 Grade heads to meet with their Early Childhood Center pen pals throughout the year, they’ll be spending some time doing mission projects with their younger friends.  In September, they are collecting books (new or gently used) for when our church congregation serves dinner at the Welcome Inn.  If you have any children’s or teen books at your home that you no longer use and would like to donate, we’d love them!  We’re hoping we’ll be able to give these less fortunate kids a TON of really great books!  Thank you in advance for your generosity!!

*This weekend is the Fall Fun Fest!!  If you're able, we'd LOVE for you and your child to walk in the parade with us tomorrow.  The parade theme this year is “In the Spirit of America.”  Our parade location is #61, so come to the Freshman Center parking lot off Vesper.  Please be there by 9:45 a.m. rain or shine (dress accordingly).  You can wear school colors or patriotic ones.  According to parade guidelines, please do not bring bikes, skates of any kind, or skate boards.  Strollers and wagons are OK though.  If you cannot walk with us, you can pick up your student at the end of the parade route at St. John LaLande Catholic church and school, on R.D. Mize Rd – between Range and 7 Hwy.

*School picture day = Monday! Order forms came home on Wednesday. If you would like to order your pictures online, you may go ahead and do so. The website is: www.inter-state.com/order. Our school code is 11634VA   Pictures for Homeschool students will begin promptly at 8:30, followed by the group pictures at 8:45.  1-2 parent volunteers would be very helpful to keep things moving smoothly and at an efficient pace.  Please let Mrs. Anderson know if you're able to help.

*We are looking for someone to be our coordinator for our yearly Trivia Night event, which will be held in April.  If you would like more information contact Mr. Kuerschner at school.

*Our Young Rembrandts program, for grades K-6, starts next Monday, Sept. 19th.
