It's a Freaky Friday! ;)

Good afternoon!  We have had a great week!  Today, our class even received donuts from Mr. Holland!  (THANK YOU—What a fun way to begin a Friday!)  Kamryn and Nolen helped us get this surprise by doing so well a few weeks ago in our Walk-A-Thon.  They had the highest number of laps in the school (18).  Well done, kiddos!

Please look at the bottom of this email for sign-ups for upcoming field trips, parent/teacher conferences, etc.  Thank you so much!
Reminder: Next Friday, October 20th, is the end of first quarter.  (Already?!)  Your child may turn in “redone” work up until Wednesday, October 18th.  Thank you.  We also dismiss at 1:00 that day!

Here is what we have been up to:

Religion- We have learned about the people of Israel and their long journey through the wilderness,, as well as the temptations that they faced.  We correlated that with us today, and all of the sin we face daily!  We need to turn to God with trust!
Next week, on October 18th, (8:45) we will be hosting Chapel.  We will be sharing a message about how Jesus is God’s Son.   Please come and join us if you can!  We will practice our skit during Religion class next Monday and Tuesday.
Operation Christmas Child information came home this week.  There is a collection box by the office.  Let’s fill it up!  We are all looking forward to our packing party on November 13th!

Next week’s memory:
October 17- THE FIRST COMMANDMENT- You shall have no other gods.
What does this mean?  We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.

October 20- THE SECOND COMMANDMENT-You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

Language Arts- This week, we read a story called, “Dear Mr. Winston.”  The story was based on a girl that made a terrible mistake in the library, and she wrote letters of apology to her librarian, Mr. Winston.  We talked about friendly letters, about commands, and exclamations, and about sincere apologies.  This was a fun story to read!

Today we were visited by Myrna Mardis, a member of Blue Springs Optimist Club.  She has been delivering dictionaries to all 4th grade students in Blue Springs, and she visited our class today!  We are so excited to have our own personal dictionaries.  :)  It has become one of the “rites” into 4th grade!

Spelling Words for the Week of October 20th
from “Stuart Little” by E.B. White
sharp, solemn, streamed, trifle, stooping, terrific, pantry, substitute, drawn, sill
Challenge Word: *belittling

Math- This week we worked with multiplication—learning how to relate subtraction and division to it, solving simple problems, and learning the multiplication properties.   Next week, we will dig in further, and start solving word problems!

Social Studies- We read a Scholastic News (current events) story about the recent hurricanes and flooding.  This led to some great discussions.
Science- We began Science this week!  We have talked about the steps to the Scientific Process, and analyzed exactly what a scientist does.  We reviewed the words: hypothesis, variable, and experiment. Today, as scientists, we built bridges that we thought could hold a cup of 20 pennies.  We could only use masking tape, paperclips, rubber bands, construction paper, and straws.  We had fun and learned a lot!

 SPECIAL CLASSES
Art- We made beautiful “zentangle” pumpkins with lines and vibrant colors!  They are brightening up the hallway…
Writing-We continued writing our fractured fairytale stories.
P.E.-We are worked on physical fitness by doing crunches and running a ½ mile.  I will send home your child’s times and results in the next few weeks.
Music- The kids sounded beautifully last Friday when they sang for a Bible study group at the north site!  We are so proud of them!  We have been working on recorders and songs for the Christmas program!
