December is Here!

Hello, 3rd/4th grade parents!  I missed your kiddos after our Thanksgiving Break, and was very happy to see their smiling faces on Monday.  :)

Important News:
THANK YOU so  much for your contributions for our children we have “adopted” for this Christmas season.  We were able to purchase so many gifts of games, toys, and clothes!  Today, we prayed over and wrapped our presents that we purchased for these neighbors in need.  What a blessing!  I will deliver them this weekend for Timothy’s Journey to the Manger. Thank you!

THANK YOU also for worshiping with us this Wednesday when our school helped with the Advent service.  The children did a beautiful job, and we are so appreciative that you were there to worship and praise God with us!

ALL SCHOOL BOWLING & CAROLING PARTY - December 17
We will need parent drivers for both bowling and caroling.  The whole school will head to Lunar Bowl in the morning.  We will return to school for lunch.  2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade will carol at Benton House from 1:00-1:30 pm.  Watch for more information to come.  We would love for you to join us!  https://forms.gle/UxqQSMUdMmbVcaHf9

TLS CHRISTMAS PROGRAM- The Greatest Gift - December 15  6:30 pm
Invite your family and friends!  All are welcome!  Student should wear church dress.

POLAR EXPRESS PARTY - December 20
We will be reading books by Chris VanAllsburg, ending with “The Polar Express.”  On the 20th, the kiddos can wear their pajamas to school, (please wear or send tennis shoes too!) and we will watch the movie with some hot cocoa and candy canes!  Blankets and pillows are welcome for this fun morning.  We dismiss at 1:00 for Christmas break that day!

Here is what we have been up to this week:
Religion-We discussed the lives of David, Saul, and Jonathan.  We had some mature conversations about jealousy and the sins that occur when we allow jealousy to take over our hearts.  We were all reminded of God’s forgiveness and grace in these circumstances.

Memory next week:
12/10-THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT
You shall not steal.  What does this mean?  We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor’s money or possessions, or get them in any dishonest way, but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income.
12/13- THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT
You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.  What does this mean?  We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor…

Language Arts-
3rd graders read the story entitled “Young Thomas Edison.”  This story gave us so much insight into the early life of this amazing inventor!  4th graders read, “Jose!  Born to Dance!,” which is the true story of Jose Limon, and how he transformed the world of dance with this talent.  Both stories were amazing biographies!  We also discussed and practiced analogies this week, and focused on cursive U, V, W, X, Y, and Z.

Spelling Words next week, December 13th:
3rd grade: Story: “Jump!”
joy, point, voice, join, oil, coin, noise, spoil, toy, joint, boy, soil, choice, boil, poison, destroy, Challenge Word: treacherous
4th grade: Story: “Dear Mr. Winston”
spark, prepare, cheer, tear, scarf, scare, repair, earring, scarce, weird, sharp, rear, spare, gear, hairy, compare, alarm, harsh, upstairs, square, weary, startle
Challenge Word: treacherous

Math-3rd graders learned how to divide and how to relate division to subtraction.  4th graders learned how to multiply 4-digit numbers with zeroes, and how to apply this skill to solve real-life story problems.

Science-We worked on our plant and animal cell posters.  We are learning all those cell parts!  Next week, we will classify plants and animals.

Social Studies- In current events, we learned about the fate of African penguins.  We also had a great classroom discussion about re-gifting!  ;)

Art: We began making cat contours.  We will finish these next week.
Writing: We wrote cinquain poems, and illustrated them.  They are fantastic!  These will be placed in a classroom book.
Computer: We published our writing.
P.E.: We are learning basketball skills.  This week, we worked on dribbling and passing: chest, bounce, and overhead.
Music:  We are practicing songs for our Christmas program!
