Happy Weekend!

Hi, Parents!  I forgot to remind you of this last week:  We have an early dismissal today at 1:00!  Today is the end of the third quarter!  Can you believe it?!  Goodness… grade cards will come home next Friday, March 20th.  Thank you!

*I shared this comic this week that really helps explain the coronavirus well to kiddos, so I thought I would pass it on!
…and PLEASE remember, amongst all of this—“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…”  ~Proverbs 3:5.  In times of uncertainty, lean on HIM, who IS certain.  Love you all!

*Next week, (March 16th-March 20th) we will have achievement testing in grades 3rd-8th.  Standardized testing is very important to us as a school because the results will let us see if our curriculum and teaching strategies are as effective as possible.  Your child’s scores are not shared with anyone – they are confidential and given out just to you.  Mr. Holland and the teachers will analyze the results of all tests to see if we can improve in any areas.  Because of this, we want to help you and your child prepare for the BEST week of testing possible.  We will conduct our testing in the morning each day.  I would like to be done no later than lunch, just to give the kids a mental break.  Students will have a minimum of 15 minutes break between each administered section.  Our afternoons will be spent doing academic activities, but nothing that will involve homework or extra nighttime workload.  There will be a lot of Religion, Science, and Missouri History fun next week!  I want the kids to be well-rested

How can you best prepare them for success?
• The night before:
Go to bed early. A good night's sleep can be key to a student's success on test day.

•The day of the test:
Have a good breakfast. Healthy foods like whole-grain cereal or toast, eggs, milk, fruit, and yogurt will give your student enough energy to get through the test. Avoid sugary, fatty foods like pastries, as well as heavy breakfasts that may exacerbate bouts of test-day nausea.

Bring snacks. Standardized tests last for hours, and by the last section or two, a rumbling tummy can interfere with a student's concentration, says bschooladmissionsformula.com. An energy bar and a juice box during a designated break can provide a boost to get your child through.

Get psyched up. Standardized tests are not on most students' lists of fun activities, but they are part of an exciting process… So start the day with a positive attitude. On the way… listen to upbeat music; or, if your [child] is already a bundle of nerves, put on some soothing music and encourage your child to lean back, eyes closed, and take some deep breaths.

Be confident. Negative thoughts can actually sabotage a student's chances of doing well.

•Other items to note:  The nature of this system of testing is to let the child complete every question given to them, regardless of the suggested testing time.  In real time, one child may complete the test in 35 minutes while another will take an hour to complete it.  Your child must bring quiet activities to keep them occupied until everyone has finished that section of the test.  Please let them bring a chapter book, comic book, or a magazine to look at.  (This is a GREAT time to read that book report book!) Technology is NOT allowed as an option.

Some children do well to have something to suck on during the test, like a mint or lemon lozenges.  I will have some of these on hand, and would welcome donations!  Please also make sure your child has a water bottle.
THANK YOU!

*We host the Lenten Dinner at the north site this coming up Wednesday, March 18th.  (4:45-6:15)  Please see how you can help:

*The kids have earned a STAR Party and we have voted to have electronic and/or game afternoon next Friday afternoon!

*We will have a visitor everyday next week!  Rebekah Self, the daughter of Mary Beth Self, our ECC director, is coming to observe our class next week.  She is a freshman at Concordia University Wisconsin.  I am so excited that she will be joining us!

*TRIVIA NIGHT – March 27 6-9pm
Teams of eight players join in a fun Trivia competition.  Gather a team of friends and come join the fun!  Ticket sales have begun.  We could use some help behind the scenes.  Use this link to volunteer: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040F4AACA62DA6FC1-trivia.

*We will have a Springtime Open house on April 2nd, from 6:00-7:00.  If you know of anyone who would love to come to Timothy, please pass this on!  I attached a flier!

*The St. Paul’s Lutheran High School Singing Saints came and visited us today…and, wow, they did an AMAZING job!  Praise be to God!   (Our own Christian Anderson was part of this amazing group!)

Goodness, that is a lot going on!

Here is what we have been learning about this week:
Religion- This week , we discussed Jesus’ miracle of healing the official’s son.  We talked about having this type of faith, and how we need to rely on God, and not complain about the blessings we have.  We also studied the Judea map from the time of the disciples.   During Chapel, the LHS Hand Bell Choir led us with music.  It was fun to see our own Zachary, Aden, and Will again!  ;)  2nd grade also helped lead Chapel with an important message about Jesus and how he took the punishment that should have been ours.

Memory next week:
3/13-
And assembled as one, in the name of the Son,
lifting hearts, lifting hands, celebrating as friends,
and proclaiming the Lord, all our praises afford.
We are brothers and sisters in Christ.

3/17-
Man walked alone and in need,
without faith, hope or promise or creed;
wandering aimlessly lost unaware of the staggering cost;
that God in his mercy would save all his people from death and the grave.

Language Arts- This week, we finished up Invisible Stanley.  We reviewed parts of the friendly letter, how to address an envelope, and worked on abbreviations.  We continued with Literature Circles.    We will not have a new reading story or spelling words next week.

Math- Third graders tested over Chapter 8, and have learned how to multiply and divide by 11 and 12.  Fourth graders tested over Chapter 7, and have begun learning longer division and how to find mean, median, and mode.  We will not have regular math time next week, but please continue to practice those math facts!

Science- All students are required to participate in the Science Fair by completing a project or work with a partner to create a project. As their science teacher, I feel like the experience that the students get from completing the science project is so valuable!   The science fair project will count as a test grade. Timothy’s Science Fair is Friday, May 1, so the projects are due at 8:30 that day so that the judges can begin their work.  Your student brought home a form for you to sign, stating you are aware of the upcoming science project.  Please sign and return this form.  Thank you!  Remember to check out this site to help: We will  help:

Social Studies-In Missouri History, we learned all about the different regions in Missouri.  We will dive head first into all of this next week!

Art- We studied the artists Norman Rockwell and Mary Engelbreit and saw how they used images from everyday life to help make their drawings and paintings.  We then chose our “happiest memories” and have begun to draw them.  Next week, we will add watercolor and colored pencil.

Writing-We learned how to write haiku poems this week!  These were fun!

P.E.- This week, we played kickball and had free time in the gym.

Computer Lab-We were able to visit the computer lab to publish our persuasive essays and haikus.
