Come Lord Jesus

Dearest parents,

I pray this week has been a wonderful one for you!

I needed to start this letter off by just saying that this week has been a tough one for me… The tragedy in Nashville just hits so close to my heart, perhaps because it was another Christian school, or because the school had so many similarities to us?  I am not sure, but those brothers and sisters, and the events of that day have not left my heart and mind.   I am sure you feel the same way.  I guess, what I want to tell you is this:  God is with us.  He is present.  I don’t know why these school shootings are happening.  I know the evil in our world takes shape, that Satan is at work, and we won’t ever understand.  God, in His infinite wisdom, does.  He makes us these promises:

2 Thessalonians 3:3 - But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.

Psalm 46:1 - God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Romans 8:38-39-For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the LOVE OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD.

I also want to assure you of this, as I am sure that you are well-aware:  We are trained here to protect your kids.  Our kids.  We have a very practiced plan in place.  We practice and receive training each summer, so it is fresh.  The last few days, I have reviewed it over and over in my head.  I just want you to rest assured that your kiddos are safe with me.  I hate it that I have to write this and let you know this.  It breaks my heart.

I waited this week for one of the kiddos to bring this all up in our conversations, sharing, and praying time, but they did not.   I know you try shield them from the terrors of the world, as I do… So, if they ask you, please tell them that we will protect them and love them no matter the cost.    We actually talked about it the first week of school when we were reviewing the fire drill and the tornado drill.  I told them what we would do during a lock down.  So, they are aware, but I did not refresh this this week.  I did not want to them to worry, or have nightmares, or to be scared to come to school.  This one is too fresh.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  THANK YOU for entrusting us with your most precious gifts.  They are true treasures, and I am thankful to our gracious God that I work HERE!

*BAND begins next year in 5th grade!  We met with Mrs. Wilson today, and tried some of the instruments.  This was SO much fun!  Your child should have come home with a band letter.  Please return this with your intent, by April 5th.  The exciting news is that being in band at TLS is FREE!  There may be TWO bands next year—a 5th grade band and a 6th/7th/8th grade band.  Please contact Mrs. Wilson, if you have any questions or concerns, or are interested in your child joining band next year.  From personal experience (all 4 of my kiddos were in band at some point), it is a wonderful way for them to get involved, gain some self-confidence, and use all areas of the brain.  It is a beautiful form of self-expression.  :)  (Homeschool friends, I will give you a handout on Tuesday.  I am not sure of the band schedule for next year, but if you are interested, please contact Mrs. Wilson.  janiew8792@gmail.com Thank you!)

Here is what we have been up to this week:

RELIGION- We discussed the “Parable of the Great Banquet” this week, discussing how our gracious Heavenly Father has invited ALL to His great banquet in the sky.  It is up to us, as Christians, to spread the invitation!  How blessed we are!  We also learned all about Jesus clearing the temple, and what righteous anger is.  We had some very enlightening classroom discussions about this.

MEMORY for the next few weeks:

4/4-Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”  ~John 14:6

4/11-The 23rd Psalm

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.

4/14-He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil, for you are with me;

your rod and your staff,  they comfort me.

LANGUAGE ARTS- We learned all about preserving our planet in a story entitled Ecology for Kids.  We were amazed at the vocabulary we already knew from our Science text!  We discussed cause and effect, learned some new vocabulary, and talked about ways we could preserve our world, even as 4th graders.

SPELLING WORDS for Friday, April 14th:  (We will not have school next Friday): April 8th:  (from the book Harry S. Truman: Thirty-Third President of the United States)

unfortunately, breakfast, handkerchief, cautiously, prayer, caress, doctor, notice, anxious, pamper, Challenge Word: Missouri

MATH- We have learned how to add and subtract mixed numbers and improper fractions.  We also learned how to multiply fractions by whole numbers!  We finished this chapter and tested over it this week.  I am proud of how hard these kiddos are working!

SOCIAL STUDIES- We finished up Unit 1 in our Missouri History books, and completed the review with friends this week.  We are not going to test over this chapter, and will count the review as the test.

SCIENCE-This week, we discussed pollution, and how we can help make the world a better place.  We began the next chapter in our Science texts, where we are learning  about invertebrates, arthropods, and worms!

SPECIAL CLASSES:

MUSIC- We met with the band and practiced some of our songs for the Spring Musical.  We learned how to sing an echo song!

ART- We painted beautiful paper plate flowers!  We used tempera and watercolors.  They are hanging up in the hallway.  :)

COMPUTER- We published our paragraphs about our cities and play on icivics.org.

WRITERS’ WORKSHOP- We studied and discussed Missouri’s natural resources, both renewable and nonrenewable.  Then, with groups, we created posters depicting this information and shared them with the class!

P.E.-We learned and played kickball this week!  We enjoyed our time outside!

Happy Weekend!

Blessings,

Kim
