Dear 4th Grade Parents,
It has been a beautiful week! Thank you for taking the time to read this note and see what we have coming up and what we have been up to! ;)
Please don’t forget:
*Timothy Lutheran will be walking in the Blue Springs Fall Fun Fest PARADE this Saturday, September 16th! The parade begins about 10 am, and we are asking that you plan to get to our float spot about 9:30. We are #53 in line, which will put us in front of the old Freshman Center (now the CIC) in Blue Springs, on Vesper Road. We wear our Rams t-shirts, uniforms, or Timothy colors (red, blue, white). The theme this year is a jungle theme, with “Walk on the Wild Side.” We are going to focus on being “Wild for Jesus!” The parade ends at St. John LaLande on R.D. Mize Road. We ask that parents walk (or ride) with your kiddos, please. See you there!
*PICTURE DAY is September 18th! You can only order pictures online this
year. The address is
www.inter-state.com/order. The code that
you will need is 78643TF. Thank you!
*Timothy Lutheran School’s 7th annual WALK-A-THON is NEXT Friday,
September 22nd, from 9:30-10:30. This is such a fun event! Thank you for those that have already
volunteered! We do REALLY need some
helpers! We need lap trackers for most
classes, and some people to work the snack station. THANK YOU!

*PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES for full-time students are scheduled for September 30th. (We do not have school this day.) I am looking forward to visiting with you about your child's grades, work habits, MAP testing scores, and how they are generally doing in 4th grade! (This is just a parent/teacher meeting.) Please pick a time that works best for you and your family. If you cannot find one that suits you, please email me, and we will work something out! I have made up a Sign-Up Genius for you to pick your time to meet: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4DADAB2DA7F58-1stquarter1
*We took our MAP testing this week! Those that were absent a few days were able to make it up with Mrs. Self. Results of these first test will be sent home next week, in time for you to review before we have our parent/teacher conferences. We will talk about what these scores mean, and how they help us in our instruction. Students will be testing two more times this year—in January and in April.
Here is what we have been up to this week:
RELIGION- One of my highlights that we do every day, is that
we have devotions every morning, followed by highs and lows, which is always so
wonderful, as I get an insight into the children’s’ lives that I normally would
not get the chance to see. It is so
wonderful… We always then pray for one another and give each other a
blessing. This week, we discussed the
relationship of Abram and his nephew Lot, and the story of Sodom and Gomorrah,
and God’s promises to Abram. We
discussed God’s Laws and His expectations of us, as well as the Good News of
the Gospel—that we cannot by ourselves follow God’s Law perfectly, but JESUS
did it for us! Because if this, we get
to live with him forever!
This week we also discussed the tragedies of September 11th, 2001. We watched a short video about this fateful day, and also read several books and had a very candid discussion. We made beautiful illustrations about our thoughts…This led to a great discussion about God and His love for us. We shared the Bible verse Romans 8: 38-39….and discussed how God will never, ever leave us. We used this verse to illustrate our thoughts of 9/11.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.~ Romans 8: 38-39
MEMORY for Next Week:
9/19-Jonah
Micah
Nahum
Habakkuk
Zephaniah
Haggai
Zechariah
Malachi
9/22-Recite all of the OT books
LANGUAGE ARTS- We finished up the novel Because of Winn Dixie! This was such a great book, and let to so many discussions about friendship, learning not to be judgmental of others, and what forgiveness looks like. This book has a lot of sadness in it too, and it has been the perfect opportunity to connect this story to our faith, and how sin is in the world, but we need to remember that Jesus has conquered that sin and death, and we can form friendships and help one another with those hardships of life. (Today, we even began watching the movie for our STAR party that we earned! We will be watching for similarities and difference between the book and the movie.) Next week, we will be reading a story out of our basal readers called “The Stranger.” Please remind your student that our Newbery book reports and projects are due September 28th. Thank you!
Skills we reviewed this week: character development, cause and effect, long
and short i words, and problems/solutions
SPELLING WORDS for the Week of September 22nd:
Story: "The Stranger"
railroad, airport, seat belt, everywhere, homesick,
understand, background, anything, ninety-nine, already, fireplace, ourselves,
all right, forever, breakfast, whenever, everything, meanwhile, afternoon,
make-believe
Challenge Word: conundrum
MATH- This week, we reviewed place value and worked on rounding and estimating sums. We tested over this material today, and those tests will come home next week. We will begin discussing and reviewing Addition and Subtraction Properties and Rules, addition and subtraction patterns, how to add and subtract mentally, and how to estimate sums and differences next week! We are on our 3’s in mad minutes! Please keep working at home!
SOCIAL STUDIES- In Social Studies, we learned about the Northeast Region of the United States and completed some map skill work.
SPECIAL CLASSES
ART- We learned how to do make contour lines, practicing
just letting our eyes follow a contour line and drawing it. We were not “allowed” to look at our papers
when we did this. It was fun to see the
results! Then, we studied some pictures of
cats, drew cat contours, filled in details and chose colors and patterns that
would compliment that cats. These are so
very cool!
MUSIC- The students practiced songs for the parade on
Saturday. They sound SO beautiful with
their praises to God! Hopefully, you
will be able to come and hear them!
WRITING- We learned the 5 parts of the friendly letter and
how to address envelopes. Then the students
wrote friendly letters to me, and I will write them all back! We also worked on the writing process, and
students began writing their own fiction stories. Students planned, drafted, revised, edited,
and will begin publishing their stories next week.
P.E.- We worked on volleyball skills this week—passing,
setting, hitting, and serving!
